Case Study: GEL Drilling Waste Handling
THE CHALLENGE
Geothermal Engineering Limited (GEL) is a leading developer of geothermal energy in the UK, with the goal of helping to create Britain as a clean energy superpower. Their aim is to develop geothermal power, heat, and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) compliant, ultra-low carbon lithium projects.
FBG’s Waste Engineers
FBG was invited to provide drilling waste handling, management and disposal of the extractive waste streams generated during the drilling of the United Downs deep wells, known as UD1 and UD2.The drilling of the two wells produced over 3’500 tons of solid cuttings and liquid waste throughout the duration of the drilling programme. FBG was invited to provide workable solutions that could handle these large volumes of extractive wastes, whilst maximizing the projects’ ability to reuse as much of the fluid material back within the project and provide beneficial uses for the extracted solids, which due to high fluid recovery from the solids, was suitable as landfill capping material at a landfill site local to the well site, reducing the clients environmental footprint from the project.
